ASSESSMENT OF CAPABILITIES AND NEEDS OF GOVERNMENT RESEARCH INSTITUTES

Purpose

  • For the Republic of Georgia, Capital City Venture/ Georgia Innovation Technology Agency (GITA), the project assessed capabilities and needs of government research institutes.

Outcomes            

  • Recommendations for continued development of commercialization from Georgia’s research institutes, including pathways for next steps in commercializing the selected projects with commercial potential.

Participants & Process

  • Technology assessments conducted at 22 Government research institutes by an assessment team, experienced in research and development, industry, and commercialization. The purpose was to identify research with commercial potential. 

  • Other objectives included raising awareness of the institutes’ potential for research cooperation with industry and to motivate staff to commercialize research.

  • Decision filters were applied to reduce ~100 projects submitted to a final 14. Filters included: features of the research attractive to corporate partners; comparison with other R&D being conducted elsewhere; strength of the institute’s research team; new or competitive features of the technology; and stage of the development.
